Today marks the first day of the SHRM17 Annual Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.  For the next four days, thousands of HR professionals across the globe will converge for a fun filled few days of education and camaraderie.   Attendees will have an opportunity to listen to amazing keynote speakers, take part in educational seminars and workshops, speak to hundreds of exhibitors, and attend a variety of entertainment venues and after hour parties.

With four jam-packed days of excitement, here are a few tips to help you organize your attendance and maximize your time.

#1 – Start With a Quick Overview

You may have reviewed and selected a few seminars to attend when you registered for SHRM17, but just before you head over to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, you should double check the SHRM17 Annual Conference website and refresh your memory about the four keynote speakers and the exceptional entertainment.  For a quick overview, check out the SHRM conference home page and look at the Conference at a Glance page. They will give you a quick overview and help you determine which activities you want to participate in.

#2 – Pick Specific Training Sessions to Attend

During SHRM17 there are over 200 concurrent sessions organized into six tracks:

  1. Business Acumen and HR Strategy
  2. Total Rewards
  3. Employment Law and Legislation
  4. Global HR
  5. Talent Acquisition and Retention
  6. Personal and Leadership Development

Use the Sessions Search tool on the SHRM17 Annual Conference website to narrow down your seminar selection, and add specific sessions to your daily schedule.  Don’t pack your days too tight. It’s wise to leave time for impromptu activities as well.

#3 – Plan Your Booth Tour in Advance

With close to 650 exhibitors and 690 booths, it’s best to be organized. Use the Floor Plan and Exhibitor Directory to review a list of exhibitors, booth locations, categories and options.

Start by identifying the booths you really want to visit and then map out your walking path.

#4 – Plan Your Entertainment and After Hour Parties

One of the best parts of SHRM is the fun and excitement.  From informal meetups, dinners, cocktail parties, music and entertainment, there is something for everyone!  The 2017 Unofficial SHRM Party Guide is a great resource. It can be found at:  There you can find out what’s happening throughout the conference.  To stay completely up-to-date on the many events going on during SHRM17, you can text ‘SHRM” to 55678 and receive text message updates about new and changing events.

#5 – Network with Other HR Professionals

At SHRM you’ll meet a bunch of wonderful people. It’s the ideal time to share ideas, create partnerships, and find mentors. You’ll become a part of a growing community of HR professionals that can help you digest what you’ve learnt at SHRM and provide feedback and support when you implement solutions back at the office.
