The Theme of SHRM17: Going All In!

Excitement was in the air as the 2017 SHRM Conference kicked off on June 18th in the beautiful city of New Orleans. Almost 16,000 HR Professionals from all over the world came to SHRM17 for 4 days of intense learning and networking. What was really impressive is that there were over 1100 attendees from over 80 countries in attendance.

This year’s theme was about being “All In”. It was about making a commitment to enhance and advance your skills in the HR Field. In the Connection Zone, HR Professionals had the opportunity to set goals and commit in writing to how they were going to be “All In” for 2017. By the end of the conference, thousands of “All In” commitments covered the 7’ by 40’ wall, giving inspiration to us all. It was truly an amazing sight to behold.

Like most years, SHRM17 had something for everyone. The conference boasted approximately 200 concurrent sessions on subjects including Talent Acquisition and Retention, Total Rewards, Business Acumen and HR Strategy, Employment Law and Legislation, Global HR Issues and Personal Leadership and Development. Each Keynote speaker including Kat Cole, Group President, Focus Brands, Laszlo Bock, Former SVP People, Google, Patrick Lencioni, The Table Group and Laila Ali, World-Champion Athlete, had lots of tidbits to help make us more successful in our roles as HR Professionals.

In addition to the concurrent sessions, HR Professionals were also able to take advantage of Smart Stage which hosted a number of presenter for Ted Talk (about 18 minutes in length) type presentations including: Things to do and See in New Orleans, information on SHRM Certification, Networking and Connecting on Purpose, How to Navigate the SHRM Conference, HR Technology, Onboarding, Stress and Control, How to become a Better Business Partner, Big HR for Small Business and so much more. These sessions were incredibly informative, but remained short and sweet so they didn’t distract from your planned out day.

Did you happen to check out the exhibit hall? We are told that it was 2 miles long and probably one of the largest SHRM Expos ever. There were close to 650 exhibitors and 690 booths all ready to answer our questions and help us make 2017 the best year ever!

And, we can’t forget about the awesome entertainment at SHRM17. On Tuesday night we were privileged to hear the sweet sounds of Harry Connick, Jr, Musician, Singer and Daytime TV show host. All I can say is incredible…Throngs of HR Professional flocked in to see him and they were not disappointed.

Yes! SHRM17 was spectacular to say the least. But now we have to take what we have learned, stick to the commitments we have posted on the conference wall and get busy making a difference.
